“The Circle” by Dave Eggers

The Circle by Dave Eggers is the proverbial “page turner I couldn’t  put down.” The story takes place in Silicon Valley in the not too distant future and portrays a company called “The Circle”  which is like a Google or Apple or any number of other tech companies who are striving to make a better world and find that controlling everything and everyone is the best way to do it.  The main character is a recent grad named Mae who lands an entry level job there through her best friend and works her way up to the top by toeing the company line.  The theme is very relevant to our times and could be a companion piece to  Little Brother, which we read several months ago.  The main differences being that Little Brother is more in the sub-genre of “young reader” fiction and is focused more on the government’s invasion of privacy, and The Circle is for a more general audience and focused on the invasion of privacy from corporations run amok.
